TASL Census Routes: Simpson's Boatyard to Yirrill Beach (Broad Sound) This is intended as a guide only. Please use a detailed street map to navigate.

 

WIN21: Simpson's Boatyard (Roughan's Point)—From rotary at S end of Revere Beach go S on Winthrop Parkway, then take second left on Cherry Street. Park just as street turns sharply right and becomes Broad Sound Avenue. Walk left out to seawall at Roughan's Point and scan breakwater and sea beyond. Northern boundary: Line of rotted poles in water running approximately east-west. (Additional observation possible from Revere Beach rotary.) [WIN20: Short Beach—Proceed SE on Broad Sound Avenue, and take a left on Winthrop Parkway. At intersection where wall appears on right and four streets come in from right take a 135° right turn onto Endicott Avenue and park. Scan Short Beach and its cove. This site is currently not used.] WIN19: Hannaford Park—Proceed SE on Revere Street. Go left at traffic lights on Highland Avenue; go to end and turn right into Hannaford Park. Walk to crest of hill and scan.

WIN18: Winthrop Beach Crest—Return to traffic lights at Revere Street but turn sharply left onto Crest Avenue. Proceed SE to Winthrop Shore Drive and park soon after ocean comes into view on left near crest of hill next to metal railing. Scan entire cove, looking especially for Red-necked Grebes about as far out as apartment complex at Fort Heath. WIN17: Middle Sister—Proceed SE on Winthop Shore Drive and park at Pearl Street and scan. Walk SE to Cutler Street and scan Five Sisters and Broad Sound. WIN16: South Sister—Proceed SE on Winthop Shore Drive and park at Moore Street. Scan Five Sisters and Broad Sound. [WIN15: Winthrop Head—At end of Winthrop Shore Drive turn right on Beacon Street and go to end. Turn left on Shirley Street; just before passing Winthrop Yacht Club on your right take another left on Terrace Street and a left on Harbor View Avenue. Park at end and make your way through bushes to overlook of Faun Bar and Broad Sound. This site is currently very overgrown and can be skipped.] WIN14: Yirrill Beach—At end of Winthrop Shore Drive turn right on Beacon Street and go to end. Turn left on Shirley Street. After about ¼ mile turn left on Bayview Avenue and park. Walk back across Shirley Street to beach and scan ESE all way to Deer Island. At this point Broad Sound group may join Winthrop Harbor group to proceed onto Deer Island.
